Welcome to Canoeheads Frequently Asked Questions!

Q. Are we the best canoe rental company in town?

A. yes, 13 years and counting, thank you Edmonton.

Q. Is there an itinery to follow?

A. Our trips are unguided, and not supervised. You are free to take your time and relax, and take as much time as you wish. We only ask for an expected arrival time so we may meet you at the finish and load the canoes.

Q. Is the North Saskatchewan River safe as far as water quality is concerned?

A. Yes, the river is safe for recreational use. There are many misconceptions regarding the water quality and content of the North Saskatchewan River. There is not raw sewage in the river, the main reason the river may look "dirty" is because of the silt (fine mineral particles found at the bottom of bodies of water) being stirred up by the flowing water. Swimming is highly recommended on warm days.

Q. How long does the Devon - Edmonton canoe trip take?

A. On average the trip takes approximately 5½ - 6 hours. This is at an easy going pace with approximately ½ hour - 45 minutes worth of breaks included. The water flows at different rates depending on the time of year and the amount of flow allowed through the Brazeau dam.

Q. Are there longer trips than one day?

A. Yes, we can arrange custom trips specifically suited to the amount of time you have to spend on the river.

Q. Can we put more than two people in a canoe?

A. Yes, we charge $20.00 for each extra person (more than two) in a canoe. There are space concerns, usually 1 adult or two small children is still comfortable. We have 3 seat canoes available.

Q. What days and times do your trips depart?

A. We run trips each Saturday and Sunday. Weekdays are available for 2 canoe minimum booking. Our starting times are variable in order to provide you with a more personalized service. We book on a first come first served basis, you simply tell us which day you would like to go  and we give you a choices of times based on availability.

Q. What equipment and services are provided with your trips?

A. We supply your transportation, canoe*, PFD's, paddles, bailing device and ropes. This equipment is included in your trip price. If you require additional camping gear it can be rented to you.

Q. What do I need to bring on the canoe trip?

A. Drinking water, a hat and sunscreen are essential. Old shoes are a good idea. Beyond that it is completely up to you.  Some people bring a bagged lunch, others bring along a portable gas BBQ and a cooler full of food and beverages. It is a very good idea to bring both warm weather clothing and something a little heavier in case of inclement weather, rain gear is always good to have with you. Swimwear is a good idea, the water upstream of Edmonton is ideal and safe for cooling off.  Cell phones, cameras etc. should be stored in a water proof container or zip lock bag, we take no responsibility for your gear.

Q. Can we get lost?

A. No , the river will bring you back, there are no navigational choices to make.

Q. What level of canoeing experience is recommended for the trips you run?

A. All of our regular trips are run on what has been classified a novice run of the river. We have had many beginners go out and have no problems whatsoever. We recommend that you be comfortable on water, and always wear PFD's

Q. Is there a limit to how much I can bring with me on the trip?

A. No, not within reason. Some things to keep in mind are the number of people in the canoe because of physical space restrictions. However, most people are perfectly comfortable with 1 adult or 2 kids in the middle and a cooler and backpacks.
